Absurd Person Singular

The play is set over three Christmases in the kitchens of three couples: Sidney Hopcroft (Darren Philip), an ambitious tradesman, and his submissive wife Jane (Shae Thommeny); architect and adulterer Geoffrey Turner (Steve Pembroke) and his depressed wife, Eva (Karen Butler-Hues); Ronald Brewster-Wright (Neville Newman), a banker, and his wife Marion (Bronwyn Duncan). The three couples range from working to upper class.

Each summer Roo and Barney escape south, back from 7 months of backbreaking work in the Queensland cane fields to 'lay off' in Melbourne for five months with Olive and Nancy. On the first summer Roo brought Olive, among other gifts, a cupie doll. She loved it and he's brought her one each summer ever since. This is the summer of the seventeenth doll.

'Honour' won the 1996 Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Drama and has since been widely produced. A provocative drama that challenges our notion of honour, our sense of decency and our belief that love will prevail.
