Romeo and Juliet - 4 performances only - this weekend at Laguna Hall

Date: 21-Jan-10
Author: Mad Cow

There is no story more classic than the tale of the two lovers, from two opposed families, who meet a tragic end. No story which demonstrates such passion, naivety and hope. This is a tale written about youth, for youth and best performed by youth. Therefore it is the pleasure of the Mad Cow Theatre Company to present this modern adaptation of the Bard's work featuring a full youth cast.

Northern Ireland. 1972. Tension is growing between the Nationalists and the English backed Unionists and it is not long before hatred that has been brewing for centuries boils over into the streets. Violence and civilian casualties start becoming a daily occurrence as the blood creates rivers in the roads of Ireland. And whilst the atrocities are unearthing national allegiances, normal life manages to continue forging a path through this dark time.

It is within this blood-stained landscape which sees the story of Romeo and Juliet being retold with brutal energy and youthful vitality. The Irish Montagues fighting a territorial skirmish with the English Capulets. And at the same time it also provides a message of hope of being able to overcome differences and prejudices which are created within our society. At the end of the day we are all just human beings wandering this earth, wanting to love and be loved in return.

The Mad Cow Theatre Company is a youth acting troupe which has a national reputation for creating hard hitting, fast paced theatre. The professionalism of the youth actors is evident through their work ethics as they have moved into the Wollombi Valley 5 days before then opening night to acquaint themselves with the new set design. This has been further developed since last season which premiered on the Central Coast.

Juz McGuire, the director, has recently demonstrated his talents within the theatre by being accepted into the nation's finest drama academy, NIDA.

This show is being presented by Valley Artists with which Mad Cow has had a long standing affiliation.

Romeo and Juliet is being performed at Laguna Hall at 8pm from Friday 22nd to Monday 25th. Tickets are available by phoning 4998 3419 or by email on boxoffice@valleyartists.org, or from Laguna Trading Post on 4998 8244.
