Wollombi Valley Short Film Festival Programme

A A Milne's play The Ugly Duckling will open October 30 at Laguna Hall, with performances on October 31, and November 1, 5, 6, 7.
Directed by Cordelia Howell, this gives some of our younger artists a chance to strut their stuff. All the cast are aged 16 or under.

Recently a panel of tourism experts listed Wollombi as one of the 100 Best Towns to Visit in Australia. That wouldn't have happened if we did not have a strong community - which, of course, we have. More than 600 people saw our recent production of Little Voice, so we feel that we're doing our bit towards attracting people to this valley, and making it a great place to live.

Wollombi Valley Short Film Festival hits the 10 year mark The Wollombi Valley short film festival is celebrating 10 years of showcasing the work of Hunter filmmakers. From its humble beginnings in the dance hall and various other locations in the town, the festival has a permanent home at Laguna Hall which is transformed into a charming village cinema reminiscent of a bygone era.

2007 sees Valley Artists entering its tenth year of productions. The company has performed at The Antique Barn, Wollombi, both Laguna and Wollombi Halls, on the banks of the Wollombi Brook, at the Common Ground, in Wollombi Village, at the Wollombi Festival and on the Village Green at Laguna.

Like most of my wife's sterling efforts to involve me in activities that do not involve my couch and the teev, attending the play initially met with some resistance. I was not immediately swayed either by her insistence that she couldn't do a review of the play (being the OON Coordinator) or that the deadline was too close for her to engage one of the 87 MILLION creative talents dwelling behind every rock, bush and tree in the valley.

Until the set has been built, a great number of rehearsals happen in an empty room with rudimentary props in imagined spaces. Director Fiona Burless deftly manoeuvres her cast into gymnastic positions where, when you see the play there will be a stove, a light bulb or a sink, but in all cases some part of someone's kitchen. Kitchens are central to Absurd Person Singular, the three act play Valley Artists presents for the end of 2007.
